Meet Buddy
Most businesses already talk to customers on WhatsApp. It usually happens one chat at a time, from a phone, with no record of who asked what, who agreed to hear from you, or whether last week's message did anything. Buddy turns that into a real channel: one you can grow, organise, measure and automate, without losing the personal feel that makes WhatsApp work.
This guide covers what Buddy is, how it works, every feature, who it's for, how pricing works and how to get started.
What Buddy is, in one paragraph
Buddy is a WhatsApp engagement platform. People opt in to hear from you. Buddy keeps them organised with their consent attached, and you send them WhatsNews: launches, offers, reminders and updates, on WhatsApp, through your own business number. Their replies land in one inbox, sorted by intent. Automations handle the follow-ups, and every send shows you delivery, reads, clicks, replies and opt-outs. Buddy is built on Meta's official WhatsApp Business Platform and is an approved Meta Tech Provider.
Why WhatsApp, and why now
WhatsApp is where more than three billion people already have their conversations. For a growing number of customers it's the channel they check first and trust most, which is exactly why a business can't treat it like a bulk email list. We wrote a full breakdown of the shift in the rise of WhatsApp marketing. The short version: attention has moved into messaging, Meta has built the official tools for businesses to follow it there, and the brands that win will be the ones that earn permission and use it well.
How Buddy works: collect, organise, engage, learn
Everything in Buddy follows one loop. Each step feeds the next, so every message you send makes the following one better.
1. Collect
People join through your opt-in page, a link, a QR code or an import, with consent recorded as they join.
2. Organise
Every subscriber carries their source, tags and history, so you can group them by what they care about.
3. Engage
Send WhatsNews to the right audience, reply from one inbox and let automations handle the follow-up.
4. Learn
See what happened after every send, and use it to decide what to send next.
Every Buddy feature, explained
Opt-in page, links and QR codes
Every workspace gets its own subscribe page at usebuddy.app/yourname. Share it in your bio, your emails, your checkout or your store, or print its QR code on packaging, menus and event badges. People enter their name and number, agree to hear from you, and land in your audience with the date, source and consent recorded. You can also add contacts by hand or import a CSV of people who have already agreed to be contacted.
Audience
Your audience is a live list of every subscriber, with name, number, tags, source, consent status and activity. Tag people by interest, product, cohort or anything else that matters to you, then target a campaign at a tag instead of your whole list. Export it whenever you want. It's your data.
Consent
Meta's policy is clear that businesses must get opt-in before messaging people on WhatsApp. Buddy makes that the default, not an afterthought. The consent page shows who opted in, when and from where, and who opted out. When someone replies STOP, Buddy opts them out automatically and they won't receive marketing from you again.
WhatsNews campaigns
A WhatsNew is a campaign: a launch, an offer, a reminder, an update. Pick a Meta-approved template, fill in its details and personalise it with each person's name using {name}. Add a header image if the template has one, preview exactly how it looks in WhatsApp, choose who gets it, then send now or schedule it. After sending, the campaign page tracks sent, delivered, read and clicked, and if anything failed it tells you why in plain language.
Message templates
WhatsApp has one rule that shapes everything: you can message someone freely for 24 hours after they last messaged you, and outside that window you must use a template Meta has approved. Buddy's template builder lets you write templates with variables, a text or image header, a footer and buttons, then submit them to Meta without leaving Buddy. Templates you make in Meta's WhatsApp Manager appear in Buddy too, and their approval status updates on its own.
| Category | Use it for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing | Launches, offers, announcements, re-engagement | "Our autumn drop is live, {{1}}. Early access ends Friday." |
| Utility | Updates about something the customer did or bought | "Hi {{1}}, your order {{2}} is confirmed and on its way." |
| Authentication | One-time passcodes | "{{1}} is your verification code." |
Inbox
Every WhatsApp conversation with your business lives in one inbox, on desktop and mobile. Reply straight from Buddy through your connected number. If more than 24 hours have passed since the customer last wrote, Buddy tells you so and points you to a template instead of letting the message fail quietly.
Responses
Replies to your campaigns are sorted by intent: interested, question, needs follow-up, purchased and not interested. Instead of scrolling through chats, you work down a list of people who want something from you, reply in place, and mark them done.
Automations
Automations do the follow-ups you'd otherwise forget. Each one starts from a trigger: a new subscriber, an incoming message or keyword, or a reply sorted into a category. It then runs steps you choose: send a message or template, add or remove a tag, wait, notify your team, or branch on a condition. Build simple rules in a list, or design full journeys on a visual canvas. A welcome sequence, a pricing auto-reply and a hand-off to your sales team take a few minutes each.
Insights and click analytics
Insights shows how your channel is doing over time: audience growth, sends, delivery, reads, clicks, replies and opt-outs, plus revenue you attribute to a campaign. Click analytics shows which links people tapped. Together they answer the question every marketer has after pressing send: did it work?
Your number, your account
You connect your own WhatsApp Business number through Meta's Embedded Signup, right from Buddy's settings. The account, the number and the templates stay in your own Meta business portfolio. You pay Meta directly for messages at Meta's rates, and Buddy's health page shows your number's quality rating and messaging limit, so you can see problems before they cost you.
Teams, roles and multiple numbers
Invite your team as owners, admins or members. Admins manage the connection, team and settings. Members send and reply. If your business runs more than one number, Buddy's accounts page shows every WhatsApp account and number you have access to, lets you choose which one sends, and lets you decide which teammates can use each number.
For developers: API, Embed and Connect
- Buddy API (public beta from 12 October 2026): manage contacts, send approved templates and receive delivery and reply webhooks from your own product, with test keys that never touch real numbers.
- Buddy Embed (beta): put a Buddy opt-in form on your own website with a single line of code, so signups land in your audience with consent attached.
- Buddy Connect (coming after launch): integrations with Selar, Paystack, Shopify and Zapier/Make, so buyers and signups flow into Buddy automatically.
What businesses use Buddy for
Creators
Turn followers into subscribers you actually reach. Announce drops, courses, live sessions and merch, and stop depending on an algorithm to show your posts.
Ecommerce
Send launches and restock alerts, order updates and post-purchase care, then win back customers who haven't ordered in a while.
SaaS
Onboard trial users, nudge them to activation, announce features and remind people before a renewal, in the app they already check.
Education and courses
Share enrolment reminders, cohort start dates, class links and assignment nudges, and answer student questions in one inbox.
Communities and events
Send event reminders, schedule changes and follow-ups to members and attendees without juggling group chats.
Restaurants and hospitality
Share menus and specials, confirm bookings, and bring regulars back with offers they chose to receive.
Fintechs and other platforms also use WhatsApp for transactional messages such as receipts, alerts and one-time passcodes. Sending those through the Buddy API is next on our roadmap after launch.
How pricing works
There are two separate costs, and it helps to keep them apart.
- Buddy's plan. You can start on the Free plan to set up your workspace, build your audience and send your first campaigns. Paid plans add more contacts, more sends, more teammates and longer analytics history. Current plans are on our pricing page.
- Meta's message fees. Meta charges per delivered message, with rates that depend on the message category and the recipient's country. Marketing templates are always charged. From 1 October 2026, Meta also charges for replies and utility messages sent inside the 24-hour customer service window, which were free until then. Messages in the 72-hour window after someone taps a Click-to-WhatsApp ad stay free. Meta bills all of this to the payment method on your own WhatsApp Business account, at Meta's published rates. Buddy doesn't mark them up.
Getting started in five steps
- 1Create your free Buddy account and set up your workspace.
- 2In Settings, click Connect WhatsApp and follow Meta's signup window to connect your business number.
- 3Share your opt-in page, or import contacts who have already agreed to hear from you.
- 4Create a message template and submit it to Meta. Approval often takes minutes.
- 5Send your first WhatsNew, then watch delivery, reads and replies come in.
Frequently asked questions
Is Buddy official WhatsApp?
Buddy is built on Meta's official WhatsApp Business Platform (the Cloud API), and Meta has approved Buddy as a Tech Provider. Buddy is a separate company and product, not part of Meta or WhatsApp.
Can I use my existing WhatsApp number?
Yes, as long as it can be moved to the WhatsApp Business Platform. A number currently on the WhatsApp Business app needs to be moved to the Cloud API first. A new number works straight away.
Will my messages look like spam?
Not if you use Buddy as intended. Everyone on your list has opted in, templates are approved by Meta, and people can opt out at any time. Buddy's health page shows your quality rating, so you can adjust before Meta limits a number.
Where is Buddy available?
Everywhere WhatsApp's Business Platform is available. Buddy is a global product.
Does Buddy have an API?
Yes. The Buddy API opens in public beta on 12 October 2026. If you want access before then, contact us and we'll add you to the private beta.
