WhatsApp for ecommerce: 8 plays for online stores, with rules and copy
WhatsApp can carry an online store's order updates, launches, restocks and win-backs, but each message type has its own rules and price. Here are eight plays with the right category, sample copy, and what you can run today.

Use cases
Ecommerce
WhatsApp for ecommerce means using the official WhatsApp Business Platform to reach shoppers who have opted in: order confirmations and delivery updates (utility messages), plus launches, restocks, cart reminders and win-backs (marketing messages). It works best when every message is expected, the right template category is used, and replies are answered by a person.
This guide gives you eight plays an online store can run, the category Meta is likely to assign each one, sample copy you can adapt, the number to watch, and an honest note on what you can do in Buddy today versus what needs store integrations that are still coming.

Why use WhatsApp for an online store?
Email and SMS still matter, but WhatsApp does two things they struggle with. It is conversational, so a shopper can reply "does this come in green?" and get an answer in the same thread. And in many markets, including the UK, much of the EU, Brazil, India, Nigeria and the UAE, it is the app people open most. A store that is reachable there removes a step between interest and purchase.
The trade-off is that WhatsApp is personal. People block and report businesses that message them without reason, and that feedback affects your number's quality rating and how many people you can message. The stores that do well treat the channel as something customers subscribe to, not a list to blast. For the wider picture, see the rise of WhatsApp marketing.
Which ecommerce messages are marketing and which are utility?
Outside the 24-hour window after a customer messages you, every business-initiated message has to use a template that Meta has approved, and each template has a category. The two that matter for stores are utility (non-promotional, tied to something the customer did or asked for) and marketing (everything promotional). Meta's categorisation guidance gives order confirmations and shipping updates as utility examples, and an abandoned cart message ("You left {{items}} in your cart!") as a marketing example.
| Message | Likely category | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Order confirmation | Utility | Confirms a transaction the customer made; a Meta utility example |
| Shipping and delivery updates | Utility | Specific to the customer's order; a Meta utility example |
| Delivered-order check-in ("any issue?") | Utility | Meta gives a post-delivery issue check as a utility example |
| Abandoned cart reminder | Marketing | Meta lists it as a marketing example |
| Back in stock alert | Marketing (plan for it) | Promotional and not tied to a completed transaction; Meta's page does not name it, so assume marketing |
| Launches, drops, offers, discount codes | Marketing | Promotional by definition |
| Win-back and "we miss you" | Marketing | Promotional re-engagement |
| Review request with a discount | Marketing | Any offer makes it promotional |

What does WhatsApp cost an online store in 2026?
Meta charges per delivered message, at a rate that depends on the category and the recipient's country (Meta pricing). For a store, the practical summary from 1 October 2026 is:
- Marketing templates (launches, restocks, cart reminders, win-backs) are always charged.
- Utility templates (order and delivery updates) are charged outside the 24-hour window, and from 1 October 2026 also inside it.
- Service replies (free-text answers inside the 24-hour window) are charged from 1 October 2026 at the utility rate (Meta).
- The exception: conversations that start from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page call-to-action open a 72-hour free entry point window.
In short, every message now has a price, so relevance saves money as well as goodwill. We break down the change in WhatsApp pricing changes from October 2026. With Buddy, Meta bills these fees directly to your own WhatsApp Business account; Buddy does not mark them up. Buddy's own plans are on the pricing page.
What limits should a store plan around?
- No marketing to US numbers. Meta states that WhatsApp "does not currently deliver marketing template messages to WhatsApp users with United States phone numbers" (per-user limits). Utility, authentication and service messages still work. If a large share of your customers are in the US, WhatsApp can carry order updates and conversations there, but your cart reminders, launches and win-backs need email or SMS for those customers.
- Per-user marketing limits. WhatsApp caps how many marketing templates each person receives from all businesses, based on their engagement. If a message is held back you may see error 131049; Meta advises against retrying immediately. Sending fewer, better messages is the only real answer.
- Messaging limits. New business portfolios start with a limit on how many unique people they can message in 24 hours, which rises as you use it with good quality. See our guide to WhatsApp messaging limits and quality rating.
- Consent. Buying from you is not WhatsApp opt-in. Meta's policy requires permission to receive messages from you on WhatsApp.
8 WhatsApp plays for ecommerce stores
Each play below lists its likely category, sample copy (variables in double braces are filled per customer), the metric to watch, and how you can run it with Buddy. "Today" means it works in the Buddy App now; "with Buddy eCommerce" means it needs store events, which arrive with the Buddy Connect integrations planned for late October 2026.
1. Welcome new subscribers
Category: marketing (anything with an offer or product pitch is marketing). Sample copy: "Hi {{1}}, thanks for joining Juniper & Co on WhatsApp. We'll send new drops and restocks, about twice a month. Reply with a question any time, or STOP to unsubscribe." Metric: reply rate and early opt-outs.
In Buddy today: yes. Create an automation with the "When someone subscribes" trigger and a "Send a message" action using an approved template. It must be a template: the person signed up on your page, not in a chat, so the 24-hour window has not opened.
2. Order confirmation
Category: utility. Sample copy: "Thanks {{1}}, your order {{2}} is confirmed. We'll message you here when it ships." Metric: delivery rate, and fewer "where is my order?" emails.
In Buddy today: not automatically; Buddy Automations do not yet have a purchase trigger. With Buddy eCommerce (coming soon), an order event from your store can send this. Developers can plan for transactional utility messages through the Buddy API, which is planned for release 1.1 in mid-October 2026.
3. Shipping and delivery updates
Category: utility. Sample copy: "Good news, {{1}}: order {{2}} is on its way. Track it here: {{3}}". Metric: delivery rate and link clicks.
In Buddy today: not automatically, for the same reason. With Buddy eCommerce or the API (planned), a fulfilment event triggers it. Keep it free of offers so it stays utility.
4. Abandoned cart reminder
Category: marketing, per Meta's own example. Sample copy: "Hi {{1}}, you left {{2}} in your basket. It's saved for you, and delivery to {{3}} is {{4}}. Any questions, just reply." Metric: click rate, then recovered orders.
Baymard's research found the top reason for abandonment (excluding people just browsing) is extra costs such as shipping, tax and fees, cited by 40% of abandoners (Baymard). A reminder that states the delivery cost honestly, or answers a question, often helps more than a discount. Send once, only to people who opted in, and remember it will not reach US numbers because it is marketing.
In Buddy today: no; there is no checkout trigger. With Buddy eCommerce (coming soon), checkout events from a connected store will make this possible.
5. Back in stock alerts
Category: plan for marketing. Sample copy: "{{1}}, the {{2}} you asked about is back in stock. Sizes go quickly: {{3}}". Metric: click rate among people who asked, and sell-through.
In Buddy today: yes, and it is one of the best plays you can run now. Build an automation with "When a message comes in" and the keyword restock, add the tag restock-alert, and send a short confirmation (they messaged you, so a free-text reply inside the window is fine). When stock arrives, send a WhatsNew to contacts with that tag. One catch: the Add a tag step only works for people already in your Buddy audience, and WhatsNews only go to subscribed contacts. So on sold-out product pages, link to your opt-in page (or embed the form) with a line such as "Subscribe on WhatsApp, then message RESTOCK for an alert". For several products, use one keyword and tag per product.
6. Launches and drops to interested segments
Category: marketing. Sample copy: "New in, {{1}}: the autumn collection lands Thursday at 10am. You're on the early list, so here's first look: {{2}}". Metric: click rate and reply rate by tag.
In Buddy today: yes. Tag subscribers by interest (with a keyword automation, on import, or by hand), then build a WhatsNew with an approved template, target "Contacts with a tag", and schedule it. Buddy's Templates page includes a New product launch and a Limited-time offer starter.
7. Post-purchase check-in and care tips
Category: utility for a pure check-in about a delivered order (Meta's example is "We have delivered your order... let us know if there was any issue"); marketing if you add a review incentive or recommend other products. Sample copy: "Hi {{1}}, your order {{2}} should have arrived. Is everything as expected? Reply here if not and we'll sort it." Metric: reply rate and issues resolved.
In Buddy today: partly. You can send it as a WhatsNew to a tag such as delivered-this-week that you maintain by hand. Replies land in your Inbox and on the Responses page sorted by intent, and an automation on "When a reply is categorized" can tag or notify the team. With Buddy eCommerce, delivery events will trigger it on their own.
8. Win-back for customers who went quiet
Category: marketing. Sample copy: "Hi {{1}}, it's been a while. We've restocked the {{2}} you bought last spring. Want us to hold one for you? Just reply YES." Metric: reply rate, then repeat orders.
In Buddy today: manually. Tag past customers (for example previous-buyer), then schedule a WhatsNew to that tag. Add an automation on "When a reply is categorized" as Interested that adds a tag and notifies the team, so someone follows up while the conversation is warm. With Buddy eCommerce, inactivity will be calculated from real order history instead of your own tagging.
The eight plays at a glance
| Play | Category | Reaches US numbers? | In Buddy today | Fully automatic with |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Welcome | Marketing | No | Yes, automation on subscribe | Today |
| Order confirmation | Utility | Yes | No | Buddy eCommerce / API (planned) |
| Shipping updates | Utility | Yes | No | Buddy eCommerce / API (planned) |
| Abandoned cart | Marketing | No | No | Buddy eCommerce (planned) |
| Back in stock | Marketing | No | Yes, keyword + tag + WhatsNew | Today |
| Launches and drops | Marketing | No | Yes, tags + scheduled WhatsNew | Today |
| Post-purchase check-in | Utility (if no promotion) | Yes | Partly, manual tag | Buddy eCommerce (planned) |
| Win-back | Marketing | No | Partly, manual tag | Buddy eCommerce (planned) |
How does a store collect WhatsApp opt-ins?
Every play depends on a list of people who asked to hear from you. The best places to ask are the moments when a shopper already trusts you:
- Order confirmation page and receipt email: "Get delivery updates and restock alerts on WhatsApp."
- Packaging: a QR code on the insert card that opens your opt-in page.
- Sold-out product pages: your opt-in link, plus the RESTOCK keyword from play 5.
- Your site: the Buddy Embed form (beta), which includes a consent checkbox.
- Social bios and WhatsApp Status: your opt-in link.
State what people will get and how often, and record the source. Buddy's hosted page at usebuddy.app/yourname and its QR code record each opt-in with date and source, and replying STOP unsubscribes someone automatically. Our WhatsApp opt-in guide has sample wording.
How do you set this up in Buddy today?
- 1Connect your number from Settings, WhatsApp using Meta's Embedded Signup. Your account and templates stay in your own Meta business portfolio.
- 2Share your opt-in page and print the QR code for packaging.
- 3Create templates in Message templates: one marketing welcome, one launch, one restock. Meta usually reviews within minutes and can take up to 24 hours.
- 4Add automations: a welcome on "When someone subscribes", a RESTOCK keyword that adds a tag, and "When a reply is categorized" as Interested to tag the person and notify the team.
- 5Schedule WhatsNews to tags for launches and restocks.
- 6Answer replies in the Inbox. Inside 24 hours of a customer's last message you can reply in free text; after that, Buddy points you to a template.
- 7Review results: each campaign shows delivered, read, clicks and failures, and Insights shows delivery, read, click and reply rates across your sends.
The ecommerce solution page shows the same workflow at a glance, and the WhatsApp marketing platform guide walks through each part of the Buddy App.
What is Buddy eCommerce?
Buddy eCommerce is coming soon. It will connect storefront activity (customers, orders, checkouts, products and refunds) to WhatsApp engagement, so audiences such as recent buyers, product interest and inactive customers update on their own, and journeys like order updates, cart reminders and win-backs can run from real events rather than manual tags.
It depends on store integrations from Buddy Connect. The first set, including Shopify and Selar, is planned for late October 2026; WooCommerce, Squarespace, Nestuge and Bumpa are in development with a waitlist. Nothing in Buddy eCommerce is built beyond the Buddy App today, and we will label each piece as it becomes available. Our guide to WhatsApp integrations explains how connectors will work and what you can link today.
How should a store measure WhatsApp results?
Track each play against its own number, not one blended open rate. Reads undercount because people can turn off read receipts, and click rates are modest: SendPulse's 2026 benchmarks across 355 accounts found a median WhatsApp broadcast read rate of 63% and a median click rate of 0.6% (SendPulse). Replies and opt-outs are often the most honest signals. Buddy shows delivered, read, clicks and failures per campaign today, with sent, delivered, read, clicked and replied totals in Insights; revenue and order attribution will arrive with store integrations. See our guide to WhatsApp marketing metrics.
Frequently asked questions
Is an abandoned cart WhatsApp message marketing or utility?
Marketing. Meta's template categorisation guidance uses an abandoned cart message as a marketing example. That means it is always charged, counts towards per-user marketing limits, and is not delivered to US numbers.
Can I send order notifications on WhatsApp?
Yes, with utility templates, as long as they contain no promotional content. From 1 October 2026 utility messages are charged both inside and outside the 24-hour window. In Buddy, order-triggered messages need Buddy eCommerce or the API's transactional release, both planned.
Can I message everyone who bought from my store?
No. A purchase is not WhatsApp consent. Ask customers to opt in at checkout, on the receipt or on packaging, and message only those who agreed.
Does WhatsApp marketing work for US customers?
Not for marketing templates: Meta does not currently deliver them to US numbers. Utility messages such as order updates, and replies to customers who message you, still work.
Does Buddy integrate with Shopify?
A Shopify connector is planned for late October 2026 through Buddy Connect. Until then, use your opt-in page, QR code, embed form, CSV import or the Subscribers API.
What can a store run in Buddy today?
Welcome messages on subscribe, keyword-driven restock alerts, launches and offers to tagged segments, scheduled WhatsNews, a shared inbox with intent sorting, and automations that tag interested replies and notify the team.
